Clamp the PTO shaft in a bench vise using protective jaw pads to prevent surface damage. If no vise is available, block the shaft firmly against a fixed surface — it must not rotate while you apply force to the yoke. Attempting removal on an unsecured shaft risks injury and shaft damage.

Examine the yoke to determine how it is retained on the shaft. The EP-4.0513B uses a 3-ball collar mechanism. Other yokes may use a shear pin, roll pin, snap ring, or bolt. Identifying the correct fastener before attempting removal prevents damage — using the wrong tool on a ball collar can shear the collar sleeve permanently.

Quick release collar (EP-4.0513B): pull back the collar sleeve firmly toward the implement side and hold it retracted while pulling the yoke off the shaft. The 3 balls retract into the collar body, releasing the groove lock. Shear/roll pin: drive out with a correctly sized pin punch and hammer — never an oversized punch that will deform the pin hole. Snap ring: use snap ring pliers; never a screwdriver, which can launch the ring at high velocity. Bolt: apply penetrating oil first if corroded; use the correct socket — stripped bolt heads require extraction tools.

With the fastener fully released, slide the yoke straight off the shaft end. If it resists, do not force it with excessive hammer blows directly on the yoke body — this deforms the bore. Instead, apply penetrating oil (e.g., WD-40 or Kroil) at the yoke-to-shaft interface and allow 10–15 minutes to soak. Then tap lightly around the yoke with a rubber mallet to break the corrosion bond. An internal yoke puller tool is the most controlled method for stubborn yokes.

After removal, inspect the shaft spline for wear, twisting, or pitting. Check the yoke bore for ovality — a yoke bore that is no longer round indicates overload or impact damage and the yoke should be replaced. Clean both components with a wire brush and solvent. Apply a light coat of anti-seize compound to the shaft spline before fitting the replacement yoke to prevent future corrosion bonding.
