Practical Steps for Replacing the Universal Joint on a Tractor Driveshaft

When the power take-off (PTO) shaft of a tractor wears down, the central universal joint needs to be replaced. This isn’t too complicated, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Here are the actual steps:

Step 1: Buy the Right Part

Don’t buy the wrong one. Remove the old part from your vehicle and take it to a farm machinery shop, or measure the dimensions of the old universal joint (e.g., the diameter of the bearing caps, the total width between the two bearing caps), and tell the seller to ensure the new universal joint fits perfectly.

Step 2: Remove the Old Part and Clean

Remove the driveshaft from the tractor and implements. Use a wire brush or sandpaper to clean the inside and outside of the shaft end (also called the “fork head”) of the driveshaft, removing rust and grease. Check the fork head for cracks, deformation, or excessive wear on the bearing holes; address any problems first.

Step 3: Apply Grease Before Installing Bearings

Before installing the new crossshaft, apply a layer of grease or gear oil to the four ends (where the bearings are installed) and inside the needle roller bearings. This ensures proper lubrication from the start and prevents dry friction.

Step 4: Align the Position

Place the crossshaft into one end of the driveshaft fork. Note that some crossshafts have grease fittings; when installing, try to position the grease fitting towards the middle of the driveshaft, or at an angle that makes it easy to grease later. Don’t let it be hidden inside and out of reach.

Step 5: Tap in the Bearing

Place the needle roller bearing into the bearing hole in the fork, aligning it with the crossshaft end. Gently and evenly tap the bearing in with a mallet or copper rod until the retaining circlip groove is exposed. Do not use brute force. If it feels very tight, the bearing may be misaligned, or the crossshaft may not be properly positioned; adjust it and tap again.

Step 6: Install the Retaining Circlip

After the bearing is in place, use needle-nose pliers to install the retaining circlip into the retaining groove in the shaft end. Ensure the retaining circlip is fully seated and fits tightly. This is related to the safety of the driveshaft when it rotates.

Step 7: Install the other end and check

Install the other end of the crossshaft using the same method. After installation, rotate the crossshaft back and forth by hand; it should feel smooth and without any jamming. Move it up, down, left, and right; there should be no noticeable play.

Step 8: Final assembly and testing

Reinstall the repaired driveshaft onto the tractor, ensuring both ends are securely connected. Before starting the tractor, rotate the driveshaft by hand to ensure smooth rotation without interference. Run it at low speed, listening for any abnormal noises and noting any excessive vibration.
