Heavy Duty PTO Driveline for New Holland 900 Models Introduction

In the high-load operation of balers, the driveshaft is the vital link for power transmission. Our Heavy Duty PTO Driveline is specifically developed for New Holland 900 Models, designed to withstand the severe torque fluctuations generated during the piston compression process of large square balers.

Compared to standard parts, this series of driveshafts features comprehensive upgrades in material strength and safety protection. Manufactured from high-grade 20CrMnTi alloy steel and subjected to precision dynamic balancing, it ensures low vibration and high output even at high speeds of 1000 RPM or 540 RPM, effectively extending the service life of both the tractor and baler gearbox.

We not only offer pto shaft but also provide CV joint boot repair kits. Click below to learn more.

Working principle: From power output to efficient compression

A heavy-duty PTO (Power Take-Off) drive shaft is not just a steel pipe; it’s a complex mechanical power transmission system:

  • Power Input: One end of the drive shaft connects to the tractor’s output shaft via a spline. For the 900 series, this typically operates at 540 or 1000 rpm.
  • Universal Joint Transmission: High-performance universal joints allow for smooth power transmission even when there is an angular difference between the tractor and the baler (e.g., during turning).
  • Telescopic Compensation: During operation on uneven fields, the drive shaft’s telescoping tubes expand or contract accordingly, preventing the shaft from jamming or disconnecting due to fixed length.Overload Protection: Power is transmitted through a slip clutch. When the baler ingests excessively thick material or foreign objects, causing a sudden increase in resistance, the clutch plates will slip in a controlled manner, instantly interrupting the rigid power transmission and protecting the tractor and baler gearboxes from being damaged.

Drive Shaft Maintenance & Lubrication Guidelines

Proper maintenance of your PTO shaft is essential for safe operation and long service life. Follow the guidelines below to ensure reliable performance under demanding agricultural conditions.

  • Maintain correct joint phasing
Always keep universal joints correctly aligned and parallel to prevent vibration and premature wear.

  • Lubricate at regular intervals
Apply grease routinely to all grease nipples on the PTO shaft. While driveline joints are easily lubricated, splined sections must be greased separately using a grease gun.

  • Inspect telescopic movement
Before each operation, confirm that the telescoping sections slide freely without binding or resistance.

  • Secure the safety chain properly
Attach the external safety chain firmly to both the tractor and the implement to prevent the PTO guard from rotating during operation.

  • Check yokes and bearings for wear
Inspect all yokes, bearings, and cross kits for signs of excessive play, cracking, or deformation.

  • Verify locking mechanisms
Ensure the spline locking pin or collar spring functions correctly and securely locks the shaft in position.

  • Confirm overload protection is installed correctly
If equipped, make sure the shear bolt or slip clutch is properly mounted and adjusted according to specifications.

  • Operate within rated limits
Use the PTO shaft only within its designed speed and power range. For HZPT compact tractor applications, the recommended operating speed is 540 RPM.

  • Avoid excessive lubrication
Over-greasing can attract dust and debris, accelerating wear instead of preventing it.

  • Keep the shaft clean
Periodically clean the PTO shaft using penetrating oil to remove dirt, rust, and contaminants.

  • Check drawbar and attachment clearance
Ensure drawbar pins and implement components do not interfere with or damage the PTO shaft or its protective guard.

  • Replace worn or damaged shafts immediately
If any component shows signs of fatigue or damage, replace the complete PTO shaft without delay. Partial repairs may compromise safety.

If you are uncertain about correct PTO shaft installation or maintenance, consult HZPT or a qualified agricultural service technician. For safety reasons, we supply complete PTO shaft assemblies only and strongly recommend timely replacement to avoid operational risks.

PTO Driveline Measurement | 3 Quick Steps for Beginners

Step 1: Measure the Shaft Length (Closed State)

First, fully retract the PTO shaft so that the telescopic tube is in its shortest position.
Use a tape measure to measure the distance between the outer edges of the yokes at both ends. This value is the closed length of the PTO shaft.

Step 2: Measure the Universal Joint Dimensions

When measuring the universal joint, record two data points:
The overall length from one bearing cap to the other bearing cap
The outer width of a single bearing cap

Step 3: Compare and Select

After completing the above measurements, use the PTO yoke size chart or PTO shaft series selection tool,
to confirm the required PTO shaft or individual component specifications before ordering or replacing.

📌 Important Note:
If the PTO shaft is significantly worn or deformed, it is recommended to replace the entire PTO shaft assembly to ensure safe operation.

PTO Driveline for New Holland 900 ModelsFAQs

Q1: Can this shaft withstand the impact of my New Holland 960 under heavy load?

Absolutely no problem. This Heavy Duty PTO Driveline features reinforced tube wall thickness and larger universal joint diameter, specifically strengthened to handle the piston recoil force of large models like the 960, offering far superior stability compared to generic products on the market.

Q2: Do you supply a complete set of PTO driveline parts for the New Holland 900 series?

Yes. Besides the complete driveshaft assembly, we also stock a wide range of PTO driveline parts (such as spline yokes, special-shaped tubes, and clutch plates). As a direct supplier, we can guarantee B2B customers a one-stop shop for all necessary wear parts, ensuring worry-free maintenance.

Q3: What is the fatigue strength of these PTO driveline components?

For the high-frequency impact of the 900 series, our PTO driveline components (such as universal joints and inner tubes) are forged from high-strength alloy steel and undergo secondary heat treatment. Their torsional strength far exceeds standard parts, effectively reducing metal fatigue fracture during large square bale operations.

Q4:What are some key PTO driveline maintenance recommendations for the 900 series baler?

To ensure long service life, we recommend lubricating the universal joint every 8-10 operating hours. Our design optimizes the grease fitting location, making PTO driveline maintenance more convenient. Regularly checking the wear of the clutch friction plates can also effectively prevent baler damage caused by overload.

Q5:If purchasing in bulk, how do you support customers in providing local PTO driveline maintenance services?

We provide detailed maintenance manuals and technical support, and support bulk supply of PTO driveline parts repair kits. Even during the busy harvest season, your technical team can quickly complete repairs using our standardized components, reducing customer downtime.
