Agricultural Machinery PTO Shaft Cutting and Installation Practical Guide

Preparation Phase
When configuring or replacing a power take-off (PTO) shaft for new agricultural implements, the shaft often needs precise cutting due to variations in spacing between different tractors and implements.

Step 1: Positioning and Measurement

First, mount the implement onto the tractor’s three-point hitch system and adjust it to the working position. Do not connect the PTO shaft at this time.
Use a tape measure to measure the straight-line distance between the tractor’s PTO shaft spline and the implement’s input shaft spline.

Record this value (assume it is $L_d$).

Step 2: Allowing for Safety Clearance (Crucial)

To prevent damage to the universal joint and tractor gearbox due to the PTO shaft binding during operation or lifting, a certain buffer space must be subtracted from the measured value.
1.Recommended clearance: At least 75mm of telescopic clearance should be reserved.
2.Calculation formula: Total length to be cut = Original PTO shaft length – (Measured distance – 75mm).

Practical Example:

Assume the new PTO shaft has a total length of 1000mm, and the measured distance between the tractor and implement is 800mm.
Calculation: $1000 – (800 – 75) = 275mm$.
Conclusion: Both ends of the PTO shaft (inner and outer tubes) need to be cut by 275mm each.

Step 3: Cutting Operation

1.Separation and Disassembly: Pull the PTO shaft completely apart, separating it into two independent inner and outer sections.
2.Marking and Cutting:

  • First, measure the length to be cut (e.g., 275mm) on the plastic protective sleeve and mark it.
  • Use a hacksaw or angle grinder to cut off the excess plastic sleeve.
  • Then repeat the above measurement and cutting steps for the internal steel drive tube.

3.Mirror Operation: Perform the exact same measurement and cutting on the other half of the PTO shaft.

Step 4: Subsequent Processing and Installation

  • Deburring: After cutting, be sure to use a file to clean the metal burrs from the end of the steel tube; otherwise, it will hinder the sliding of the inner and outer tubes.
  • Lubrication: Before reassembly, apply an appropriate amount of grease to the sliding contact surfaces of the steel tubes.
  • Testing: Once smooth sliding is confirmed, the driveshaft can be locked onto the power shafts of the tractor and implement respectively
